Nilo Guzman

Subject: E! True Hollywood Stories!! Rodrigo Eberienos

Here are some truths about Rodrigo and Brazilian players!

At SPAH 1994 convention I meet a player named Nilo Guzman, which some of you may remember. For those of you that don't know Nilo, he is a extremely talented player with a ton of speed, like Rodrigo, in fact he was Rodrigo's teacher. I learned about Rodrigo in 1994 when I went to visit Nilo in Brazil. Nilo told me he had a student that was learning so fast that he couldn't believe it. That student was Rodrigo. Nilo knew at that time that Rod had possessed a real talent. Knowing this about Rod, Nilo was very careful about teaching him. I remember Nilo telling him over and over again "play slow first, then slowly speed it up, you should always know where you
are at on the harmonica, no matter how fast your playing." Well it looks like Rodrigo listened to Nilo.

Shortly after that trip to Brazil, Nilo came to Chicago and became my roommate for about 2 years. Rod would come and visit once and a while. We couldn't believe how fast he was progressing. Rod stayed with us about 2 weeks in Chicago, and let me tell you guys he plays all day! I mean all day, and he really does play some ideas 1000 times!!! He has a passion for the harmonica that is unmatched, and is very inspiring to be around. On one of my trips to Brazil Rod invited me to stay at his house, which I did. We played and talked about the harmonica day and night, he was so far advanced by this time I was having a hard time keeping up with him. He was Fast, clean and filled with ideas at mach speed. Rod and I have become close as brothers, I'm very happy for him.

Here is how it all works; Nilo Guzman studied with the best blues player in Brazil his name Flavio Guitarra, (one of my favorite players) Flavio was heavily influenced by Mark Ford(my all time favorite player) and taught that style to Nilo. Nilo is heavily influenced by Sugar Blue and
Mark Ford and taught those style to Rodrigo. Now there is no stopping Rod. He is now teaching young impressionable minds in Brazil, so it is only going to get better. I'm personally blown away by the number of young talented players in Brazil.

I am planning on going back to Brazil in January of 2002 to do some workshops on harmonica maintenance and spend alot of time with my little brother. He is a great friend. I can't wait to see all the players again, and see Rod's band. These guys are great, they'er all really young and work just as hard as Rod. A band to watch out for "Bludogues." Once again Rod and I were roommates at SPAH 2001, and It was a joy to see how Rod's passion for our instrument is still passionate as ever.

Thanks Rodrigo for playing the harmonica and inspiring us all!

Quanto à faixa que você ouviu, chama-se Pay Back Time.
