O Planet Harmonica é o site que o Gaita-BH gostaria de ser quando crescer. E o responsável por este que é seguramente um dos melhores sites de gaita existentes é o Benoît Felten, o entrevistado desta edição. O Gaita-BH agradece ao Ben e está trabalhando firme para chegar no posto deste irmão mais velho da web.
GBH: Quem é você, por que você toda harmonica e mantém o site?

BF: Eu sou apenas um francês que se apaixonou pela harmonica e pela internet mais ou menos ao mesmo tempo em 96-97. Naquela época, haviam muito poucos sites sobre harmonica na web então decidi fazer um site (originalmente era chamado xhuan.com, mas não existe mais). Finalmente, entrevistei alguns grandes harmonicistas e decidi fazer o Planet Hamonica tal como ele é hoje. Uma de minhas idéias era estreitar a distância entre EUA e o resto domundo, uma vez que eu percebi que os músicos e sites de harmonica dos EUA têm seu foco principalmente, senão apenas, em notícias e lançamentos nos EUA. Por isto o site está disponível tanto em português como em francês.
I'm just an average French guy who fell in love with the harmonica and with
Internet at the same time around 96-97. At the time, there were few
resources for the harmonica on the web; and I decided to start a website
(originally, it was called xhuan.com, but that no longer exists.)
Ultimately, I got to interview a few great harmonica players and I decided
to start Planet Harmonica as it is now. One of my ideas was to bridge the
gap between the US and the rest of the world since I noticed that US players
and websites focus mostly if not only on US releases and news. That's why
the site is available both in English and in French.
GBH: Quais as dificuldades em manter um site como o Planet Harmonica?
> 2. What are the difficulties of maintaining a site like planetharmonica
BF: Imensas! Não apenas demanda uma grande quantidade de tempo somente escrevendo o conteúdo, mas todo o lado técnico também consome muito tempo também. Felizmente, algumas pessoas se ofereceram para me ajudar ao longo dos anos e, espero, nos próximos meses, uma nova versão do site irá me permitir uma atualização mais frequente. Gostaria de aproveitar a oportunidade de agradecer a todos estes rapazes e moças que me ajudam com o site. Sem eles, eu estaria morto agora.
Huge ! Not only does it represent a great amount of time just writing the
content, but all the technical side eats a lot of time as well. Fortunately,
a fem people have offered to help me over the years, and hopefully, in the
next few months, a new version of the site will allow for more content
updated more often. I'd like to take the opportunity to thank all these guys
and girls who help me with the site. Without them, it would be dead by now !
GBH: Como está o cenário da harmônica na França hoje em dia?
> 3. How is the harmonica scenario in France nowadays
BF: Bastante interessante. Pode soar chauvinista, mas estou realmente convencido que o cenário francês da harmonica é especial. Acho que há muito mais criatividade aqui que na cena americana, mesmo tendo nossa dose de imitadores. Mas gente como Greg Szlapcsynski, Olivier Ker Ourio, Eric Chafer e Michel Herblin estão realmente levando a harmonica a totalmente novas direções, e me orgulho em dizer que estes caras são franceses! Contudo, há um monte de gente muito interessante em outros lugares da Europa, na Austrália, e de fato, no Brasil!
Very interesting. This may sound chauvinistic, but I really am convinced
that the French harp scene is special. I find that there's a lot more
creativity here than on the US scene, even if we have our share of copycats.
But people lile Greg Szlapcsynski, Olivier Ker Ourio, Eric Chafer or Michel
Herblin really are pushing the harmonica in totally new directions, and I'm
proud to say these guys are French ! However, there are a lot of very
interesting guys elsewhere in Europe, in Australia, and indeed in Brazil !
GBH: Quem são os grandes, hoje em dia, na sua opinião?
> 4. Who are the greatest players nowadays in your personal opinion
BF: É uma pergunta capciosa. Alguns anos atrás, eu provavelmente daria a você alguns nomes que me agradavam, mas agora eu me concentro na música que não destaca tanto o músico, mas porém a música mesmo. Alguns músicos excelentes às vezes fazem músicas horríveis! Contudo, um indicativo de que um músico é um dos grandes é quando eu pego cada novo lançamento, mesmo sem saber de antemão como ele é. Desta forma, eu diria que Howard Levy (não vejo a hora de ouvir seu novo CD como Anthony Molinaro), Bill Barrett, Greg Szlapczynski. Na arena do blues, eu não sou tão interessado em grandes músicos da mesma forma que gosto dos grandes compositores, então realmente não posso te dar nomes.
That's a tricky question. A few years back I probably would have named you a
few players who amaze me, but now I'm focusing so much on the music that I
don't so muck think in terms of great player as I think in terms of great
music. And some awesome players sometimes produce really horrible music !
However, a sure sign that I think a player is great is when I get every new
release without even knowing what it's like. So I'd have to say Howard Levy
(can't wait for his new CD with Anthony Molinaro...), Bill Barrett, Greg
Szlapczynski. In the blues arena, I'm not so much interested in great
players as I am interested in great songwriters, so I can't really give you
any names.
GBH: Qual vai ser o futuro da harmonica, na sua opinião?
> 5. What will be the future of harmonica in your opinion
BF: Acho que está em aberto. Muita gente vê a harmonica estritamente como um instrumento de blues e folk e vai ser conosco, músicos e fãs, que iremos mudar isso. Particulamente, eu me refiro à música moderna, estilo que exige fôlego, um monte de fãs imediatamente reclamam "isto não respeita a tradição". Acho que se a harmonica pretende ser um instrumento do século 21, será graças a gente como G. Love e John Popper, e não graças às centenas de músicos de blues, por melhores que sejam. Se não sairmos deste "gueto" do Blues, então não sei se há um futuro para a harmônica além de ser um instrumento de folk tradicional...
I think it's open right now. A lot of people view the harmonica as a stricly
blues and folk instrument and it's up to us, the players and the fans, to
change that opinion. I'm particularly concerned that when harmonica is used
in modern music, stuff that gets airplay, a lot of harp fans immediately
jump on their soapbox and moan because "it's not true to tradition". I think
if the harmonica is to be an instrument of the 21st century, it will be
through people like G Love and John Popper, not thanks to the hundreds of
blues players, good as they may be. If we don't get beyond this blues
"ghetto", then I'm not sure there is a future for the harmonica, beyond
being a traditional folk instrument...
